For some reason, I've been on a bigger Fight Club kick than usual for the last week. It might have something to do with the fact that I've watched it four times in the last six days.
The first time I watched it, I liked it because it kept me confused and trying to think through the story. That and the fighting (just like any teen-aged boy). But then, after I knew what would happen and watched it again, I was able to pay more attention to the characters and their lines. I liked the movie the first time I watched it, but I fell in love with it the second time around. And even after watching Fight Club countless times, I still watch it like I've never seen it before and notice something new every time.
Over the next few days, I'm going to be posting some of my favorite quotes from the movie and why I like them.
Today's is Tyler's speech to the Club just before we meet Lou, the owner of the bar where the original club starts.
The way that I see it, Tyler is telling us that we aren't living up to our full potential. We are just blindly following what we are told my the media and advertising. Our generation had no great war, great depression, or great tragedy. Nothing to help snap us out of his so-called "IKEA nesting instinct". And he was right. During the 90s, people didn't care about the important things in life. Just appearing normal and like they had a comfortable living. What we needed was an awakening. And then we got our great war. After September 11, people starting snapping out of their little self-containment bubbles. We started seeing what was important and things started getting closer to how they should be.
But now, almost ten years later, we have started slipping again. I hate to say it, but I think it might be time to shake our country awake again.
